Came across the review for The AI Con by Emily M Bender and Alex Hanna while reading the Guardian. Haven't had a chance to pick up the book just yet, but thought the review interesting enough to share here. Excellent question, Will new technology help to make the world a better place, or is AI just another tech bubble that will benefit the few?

From the review alone, there's obviously two sides to the equation. AI has so far done some very interesting things for the sciences, medicine in particular it seems. But from the perspective of the average internet user, it''s my opinion that AI is kind of a nightmare. ChatGPT kind of works at best but is very unreliable. The number of AI generated images is growing exponentially which makes it more difficult to actually search for things I might need or want by image search and of course we still have not been able to reign in all the toxicity created by social media. Definitely double edged sword. Is an AI going to wipe out decide that humanity is bad for itself and the greater good of the planet and wipe us out, I feel that's unlikely. But will human use of AI fracture our society even more than it already is, yeah probably. So, feel this might be an interesting read - The AI Con.

Yes, I needed to be a bit snarky and use "The Entity" from Mission Impossible.
