It’s been a long time, couples weeks, since I purchased and then subsequently promised some sort of a review and thoughts on Bollywood films by way the book An Introduction To Bollywood. First off, the book itself is good, not much to really say about it, it’s a book that reviews movies, so it’s really neither good nor bad. The opening pages gives a nice history of why the author, Ken Fields, became interested in the genre to begin with, and then what he’s calls Bollywood Basics which is set up in a Q and A style answering a number of questions about Bollywood, ie. singing and dancing, playback singers, the big names, actors and actresses. I didn’t bother to count how many movie reviews there are, maybe 40 (I’m guessing). The reviews are good, 2 pages or so each, with a quick summary of each movie, who’s in it and generally the opinion of the film. Most films get at least good reviews. Despite being self published it is actually mostly well written and easy to read, if not enjoyable.
Did I start watching Bollywood films after reading it? Yes, I did actually. Having enjoyed RRR I went for the action film Ek Tha Tiger with Salman Khan, which I found quiet fun. Also watched Chennai Express with Shah Rukh Khan, very funny even in Hindi, excellent rom-com. I get it, Bollywood films are fun, will keep them in the back of the mind for future watching, binge watching line up.
